Indexi - Modra Rijeka (1978)

The one and only studio album from this ex Yugoslavia band.

Indexi was a quintet with a lineup of keyboards, bass, drums, guitars and Serbian (??) vocals.
Three other musicians added narrations, organ and piano.

ProgArchives says this is their second of in total three albums. Those two other albums is cobbled together from various recordings and more like collections. Modra Rijeka is their only true studio album and one the band still regard as their album.

This band had a split personality. Their record label and indeed the communist regime in Yugoslavia demanded that the band only released poppy and light-weight singles. Hit singles, that is. The band toured extensive in the Eastern Bloc based on these singles and sold out big concert halls there. They were really stars.

All the band wanted was to do a symphonic prog record where they could stretch themselves musically. That against strong opposition from their record label and the regime in Belgrade.

The end result is an album with some hit singles and a lot of symphonic prog in the vein of ELP and Yes.

The symph prog is really good here. The hit singles not so good. Davorin Popovic vocals is very good.

This is indeed a very special album from a special band. A good album too and one you should check out. Hence the rating.
