Aunt Mary - Janus (1973)

The third album from this Norwegian band.

The band was a quartet on this album with a lineup of guitars, bass, piano, drums, keyboards and English vocals.

I was not exactly impressed by their two first albums. See my reviews here and here.
Aunt Mary was still in beat modus and hopeless outdated on those two albums. So despite of this album being hailed as a classic Norwegian album, I did not expect much improvements.

The band still seems to think that beat is a relevant type of music anno 1973. But this is, thankfully, nowhere near the full story.

The slightly hard rock from Loaded has gone. It has been replaced by some strong flavours of Procol Harum, some ELP and some more US rock stuff. Where other Norwegian bands went down the folk rock route, there is no folk rock here. That made Aunt Mary stand out from the crowd.....

Janus is a rock album with a strong progressive rock flavour. Well, it is a progressive rock album, this forty minutes long album.

Janus is also an improvement on their previous two album. A small improvement though. It is still not a good album. It is somewhere between decent and good.
