Quatermass - Quatermass (1970)

The debut album from this British band.

Quatermass was a trio with a lineup of drums, bass, harpsischord, piano, synths, organ and vocals.
The band got help from guest musicians who provided cello, violas, violins, double bass, 12 strings guitars and backing vocals.

When I got into progressive rock back in 2004, this album was one of those I was listening to a lot.
I thought I had also reviewed this album for ProgArchives too. But I did not. So I digged out this album again for a review.

The music on his fifty minutes long album is very clearly inspired by the likes of ELP and Deep Purple. There is also a lot of blues influences here.

There is also some pretty heavy nods towards Johan Sebastian Bach on this album too.

There is a lot of heavy organs here and some raw vocals. The music is pretty heavy throughout this album.

Deep Purple and ELP became famous and sold zillions of albums. This band never really made it and sold much albums. The reason is that there is no great songs here. There are some good songs. There are also some half-decent songs here. Hence my rating and why this band never became a big name band.

2.5 points

  1. Black Sheep of the Family and Gemini are the two "hits" off this record but every track is a stunner...this is a great album! Great musicians too with an Episode Six/Ian Gillan connection that bears mentioning. Play it LOUD!
