Perception - Perception (1971)

The debut album from this French band.

Perception was a quartet with a lineup of saxophones, bass, clarinets, flute, drums and piano.

This band was an off-shot of Magma with Yocho Seffer as a leading member. They released two albums before they gave up the ghost. I will later this month review their second album too/you can find my review of their second album somewhere else in this blog.

This album was released in 1971 on an obscure French record label and re-released through Mellow Records in 2001 on CD.

Listed as a zeuhl band, I expected a zeuhl album. And this is what this album is not.

What we get is forty minutes of free jazz. Improvised and very loosely structured.

The musicians is very, very good musicians. There are some really stunning solos here. And there is some coherent playing here. There is not much of melodies and some attempts of trying anything but solos. The drums and bass are underpinning the solo raids by the other instruments.

I am not a big fan and is only rating this by the musical abilities and quality of the solos. Maybe this album is not for everyone.
